Edward
joined STFC Technology after graduating with a degree in Electronic
Engineering.
I work for the electronic system design group which is responsible for
the design, over seeing the manufacture and test of data acquisition (DAQ)
systems for scientific applications of all sizes.
This has provided many opportunities for system design work on a wide
range of scales, from a small 2 channel readout and data logging system for
a quantum electronics research project to one with tens of thousands of
channels for the CMS tracker experiment in CERN.
Most of the DAQ systems we produce utilise FPGA technology to provide
the performance, flexibility and density requirements desired. When I
arrived I was placed into small friendly team working on a project that was
a part of the CMS tracker readout chain. This was a good project to start
on, providing me with a wealth of learning opportunities. I was part of a
multi-disciplinary team drawn from several design groups and it was a
challenging high profile international project offering opportunities for
travel.
